Giving up caffeine? What are the benefits of giving up caffeine? I was raised on soda my whole life (now 21) and I NEVER drink water or anything besides soda and I get a horrible headache when I dont have caffeine. Well I stopped drinking caffeine 4 days ago and Im drinking alot of sprite now. My headaches finally stopped. I really want to start drinking just water because I heard it is sooo good for your skin? What are the benefits of switching from soda to water? Thanks!!

krennao replied: "Less sugar, better for your teeth. All that soda is not good for your teeth. Plenty, I don't drink soda never been one to drink it, I do drink coffee, and tea, water. I had stopped drinking caffeine all together a while back , stopped cold turkey for 8 months. I think caffeine in soda has more of an effect when you stop drinking it, because I never had the headaches when I quit consuming coffee."

Ashelyn replied: "You should feel very good about giving up caffeine. You should maybe have a sip of soda every now and then well if you want to.So the sprite is lemon lime soda so it's making your headaches go away since it's soda I guess.Well hope your new resolution 4 the year works!"

epic_laydown replied: "you don't have to give up soda (sprite) altogether. I would just cut down on Sprite or 7up and drink mostly water. Think of soda as a treat. As you know, it contains a lot of sugar. congrats on giving up caffeine"

Annaluvscandles replied: "The benefits are you are doing something good for your body, your nervous system.. your heart will thank you for this.. I don't do chocolate either......I have been caffeine free for 8 years. love it.."

what are the benefits of not drinking soda? iv'e decided to stop drinking soda, actually caffeine all together. health wise what are the benifits?

Carlos D replied: "You get healthier, and you lose pounds in months, if you dont drink it in months."

airlines charge for the seat. replied: "Better health and less weight gain."

xxabcdefginaxx replied: "Better health, teeth, and weight loss."

K D replied: "ya. there are acids in soda that actually decomposes your teeth, like it actually "eats" your teeth. also soda has a lower freezing point, there is stuff in it sort of like anti freez, what you use in your car."

nuts4tv replied: "My doc said that the body stores all the carbonic acid that is formed when the soda meets your digestive juices. These are caustic and can chew at the lining of your stomach and intestines, and create digestive probs. I have stopped drinking sodas for about six weeks now. The bloated feeling is mostly gone, and my stomach talks to me less and less. I have substituted tea and water. I still need the caffiene, working late nights, and still also drink coffee. But, overall, I feel better and am enjoying the many more flavors of tea that are available, moreover that of sodas. Good luck, below is a link that might help you in your info searches..."

sassy_one2006 replied: "i found out ..soda has alot ..calories and high in sugar.. when i quit drinking ..alot of soda ;;my weight went down;; ill drink one every now n then ;;water good source; of fluids"

i need help replied: "soda isn;t healthy and it has all this saccharine (sp?) that eats away at your teeth enamel,"

How can i desensitize myself to caffeine? ? So, i'm doing this tea thing that i just saw in a magazine. However, it makes me really sick. I'm sensitive to caffeine, it really upsets my stomach and I passed out once. I drank decaf today, and was completely fine, however i just found out that decaf doesnt have the same health benefits as the caffeinated. This only happens with coffee and tea, never soda. Why? and how can i make it stop?

Love Rum replied: "I believe Coffee and Tea have higher caffeine contents then soda and that maybe whats contributing to your problem when drinking those beverages but not others."

Thien N replied: "So ..... you want the benefit of coffee huh? I don't think you even need it if your body can't adjust to. One thing though, the more coffee, the better your body adjust to it. But then I don't see a point to drink coffee unless you need it to be "functional" .... :) drink wine instead!"

La Lulu replied: "I've heard that milk can help.Years ago, some truck drivers would take "benny pills" and then when they needed to kill the effect, they'd drink milk. Maybe it'll work for caffeine too. also, theanine may help. Google it to be sure! :) Wish you the best! :)"

Are there health benefits to stop drinking coffee completely? As a college student, I rely on coffee (sometimes energy drinks) to pull all nighters or get up early for class. I don't always have such bad sleeping habits, but for a while my three cups of coffee that I needed everyday was getting ridiculous. So I stopped completely. No energy drinks either. I'm trying to be healthy/ get into shape again by slowly cutting out other things from my diet (like a lot of processed foods). My dad got a little concerned and said that drinking coffee (in moderation) is actually good for someone like me who has low blood pressure. Any thoughts? -Oh, and it's been about a month without all this caffeine and I feel pretty good now that I don't rely on any beverages to keep my energy up.

aljea replied: "Wait that stuff is good for low blood pressure??? I should try that. Well I know one thing for sure, small coffee consumption (like only one cup a day or something) is good for you because it has antioxidants, however any more than that is bad for you. One thing that will give you energy naturally is lots of fruits and veggies, plenty of sleep, exercise, and make sure you have enough iron in your diet too."

vikingfromvallhalla replied: "Coffee is actually really good for you, as long as you don't overdo it. A cup or two a day is fine. Coffee has lots of really good antioxidants in it. Its been proven to fight cancer, parkinsons, and diabetes. The right amount of caffeine every day stimulates your metabolism and is good for your heart."

Stop drinking diet soda & lose weight? I stopped drinking anything with caffeine about a week ago and only drank water and sometimes sprite. Now I am ONLY drinking water. I didnt do this to lose weight but just to be healthier. I read on here that quitting diet soda will make you lose a few pounds? Is this true? I thought diet soda didnt make you gain weight since there is no calories? Also, what are the other benefits of only drinking water? Thank you!!

Josh N replied: "Drinking diet soda will not make you gain weight. It is the toxins that do. In diet soda there is bad stuff, so when they get in you it adds more toxins and after a while you will have gained a VERY minimal amount of weight (2-3 pounds). HOPE I HELPED!"

Bean replied: "The sugars in soft drinks are what you are trying to avoid. For one there are studies that show a correlation to weight gain from alternative sugars. They give you a craving for more unhealthy foods. Drinking water will keep you cells stay hydrated and therefore feeling better. It is also beneficial for many other organs so that they can function properly."

joy_angels replied: "Read this article about water www best-fat-burn-strategies com/water.htm"

camdfw replied: "Yes you will lose a little bit from not consuming anything soda realated, diet or regular. Also your ph will return to normal and as the toxins/additives are flushed from your system you should lose your craving/addiction for the soda. Good luck!"

Itz LaLa<3 replied: "When you drink water you loose weight, and it cleanses your body. It makes you a lot healither. Any type of soda is bad for you, if you look at the back there is still something tht doesnt have a 0 on it and thats the Sodium. Soda can cause Uriner Infection"

DrPepper replied: "Diet soda is very bad for you! One of the ingredients is 'Aspartame' this is a cancer causing ingredient and look out for this in all sweetners baking powder, all gum, flavored water, nutrasweet, sweet n low, splenda."

Why does green tea give me a UTI? I heard about the health benefits of green tea so I started drinking about 6-8 mugs a day and got a pretty severe UTI which got better with antibiotics but very soon after I came off them it came back (not as severe) and lasted about three weeks while I was still drinking green tea but then as soon I stopped drinking green tea it started clearing up and went completely. A few weeks later I tried drinking it again and got the beginning of a UTI so I guess I can never have it again (which is a shame 'cause I like the taste and it has many health benefits). But I'm just confused as to how it can cause a UTI...it's not the caffeine 'cause I can drink that much coffee/black tea and have no problems and I don't add sugar/milk, just boiling water that's cooled for 3 mins. Also many sites recommend green tea for getting rid of UTIs so this really confuses me. Fuck, that sounds like what i have, especially with IC being linked with anxiety disorder and multiple chemical sensitivity. Should I be worried? (i.e. is it serious?) Yeah I'll book and appointment right away, and thank you so much for making me aware of IC. An* appointment

lilpurpledog replied: "You may have IC and the tea irritates it.... talk to your doc. There are meds to make you more cozy... please talk to your doctor... they can help you best."

Fat Burners and Running - bad idea? I have my first big race coming up in 3 weeks. Well... it's not that "big" just 5k, but still, it's a first! I'm pretty athletic, but I'm thinking if I lost a couple of lbs before the race it would make the job that much easier. I'm wondering what the benefit of doing a fat burner would be before the race, or if I'd be screwing myself over because the increased heartrate from the caffeine in the fat burners would stop me from reaching my full potential. Thoughts?

hannahsaurusrex replied: "when one of my friends started taking some fat burner pill thing (her mom was psycho about weight) she ran alot slower her freshman year she got 23s then her sophomore year (on the fat burner) she got like 27s"

Yeti replied: "You're not safely going to lose a lot of weight just 3 weeks out -- maybe at most a pound or two. And the lowered fueling from calorie restriction can actually work contrary to the needs of running. Weight loss and race training often don't mix too well. A "fat burner" or excessive caffeine before a race can dehydrate, and actually elevate your heart rate to the point that things get more difficult, not easier. There can be endurance benefit from small amounts of caffeine however. Anyway, I wouldn't try to aggressively lose weight at this point, and I would not do a "fat burner" before a race. If you're looking to outright win races in the future, you can start obsessing about if losing that extra pound will save you two seconds or work against you. In the meantime, enjoy your first 5k and learn from it for the future. :)"

A few questions about anxiety and benzos? Im 18 years old and initially went to my psychiatris about 10 weeks ago for anger issues. I was put on wellbutrin to see if it helps 5 weeks ago. It helped some and put me in a generaly better mood. I have always thought i had add so i talked to him about it and he prescribed me concerta, though he did ask me several times if i had taken any add medecine before (i did take a friends vyvanse once for the sat). Anyways i said no because i didnt want to be labeled as a drug abuser or something or him not be able to prescribe anything to me since i had taken it without a pre ion. i didnt really think about it but i now realize i should have told the truth, plus he may know im lying. Although he has never asked me if i do drugs. Anyways since starting concerta I have been having really bad anxiety (atleast i think its anxiety) in the evening. I feel like there is a weird sensation in my chest (similiar to the falling feeling in your stomach but different). It is not muscles tightening or anything painful, just uncomftorable. I feel really tense and have the feeling i get when i have a big project due the next day that i havent started or when i have to go in front of the class. This did not just start when i started taking the concerta; i have had this the past year or so to an extent but not as bad. Im going to the doctor next week and am going to ask him to switch ADD medications, though im kinda worried because i know all stimulants can cause anxiety. I have stopped smoking and cut down on caffeine which helped some. I have also had very bad neck pain for 3 years. Its not always bad but becomes worse in the evening... its just tight muscles. It did get to the point a few months ago that i had full blown muscle spasms and was put on valium and had to stay in bed for a few days. Im starting to think that anxiety is causing my neck pain. My final question is do all benzos affect the same area of the brain? When i was on valium i became very irritable and angry, although doing some reading on benzos i think i would benefit from a small dose in the evening to counter the anxiety caused by stimulants.

Julia M replied: "Strattera is a ADD medication and is a nonstimulant... I would ask him or her about Strattera.... ADD medications can make you very jittery and nervous.... Benzodiazepines reduce the activity of the brain and spinal cord... Ex. Valium, Ativan, Xanax, Serax, Klonopin"

Do you want to know about Healthy food in the Holy Month of Ramadhan? SOME HEALTH GUIDELINES FOR RAMADAN This article provides useful advice on how to avoid some common problems encountered in Ramadan. If followed, it would enable one to fast comfortably and enjoy fully the spiritual benefits of Ramadan. During the holy month of Ramadan, our diet should not differ very much from our normal diet and should be as simple as possible. The diet should be such that we maintain our normal weight, neither losing nor gaining. However, if one is over-weight, Ramadan is an ideal time to normalize one's weight. In view of the long hours of fasting, we should consume slow digesting foods including fiber containing-foods rather than fast-digesting foods. Slow digesting foods last up to 8 hours, while fast-digesting foods last for only 3 to 4 hours. * Slow-digesting foods are foods that contain grains and seeds like barley, wheat, oats, millet, semolina, beans, lentils, whole meal flour, unpolished rice, etc. (called complex carbohydrates) . * Fast-burning foods are foods that contain sugar, white flour, etc. (called refined carbohydrates) . * Containing-containi ng foods are bran-containing foods, whole wheat, grains and seeds, vegetables like green beans, peas, sem (papry), marrow, mealiest, spinach, and other herbs like methie, the leaves of beetroot (iron-rich), fruit with skin, dried fruit especially dried apricots, figs and prunes, almonds, etc. * The foods eaten should be well balanced, containing foods from each food group, i.e. fruits, vegetables, meat/chicken/ fish, bread/cereals and dairy products. * Fried foods are unhealthy and should be limited. They cause indigestion, heartburn, and weight problems. AVOID * Fried and fatty foods. * Foods containing too much sugar. * Over-eating especially at sehri. * Too much tea at sehri. Tea makes you pass more urine taking with it valuable mineral salts that your body would need during the day. * Smoking cigarettes. Smoking and anything which is bad for health is Forbidden in Islaam, since Smoking is unhealthy and one should stop it completely. If you have this bad habit, it is good time to stop it now and for ever. EAT * Complex carbohydrates at sehri so that the food lasts longer making you less hungry. * Haleem is an excellent source of protein and is a slow-burning food. * Dates are excellent source of sugar, fiber, carbohydrates, potassium and magnesium. * Almonds are rich in protein and fiber with less fat. * Bananas are a good source of potassium, magnesium and carbohydrates. DRINK * As much water or fruit juices as possible between iftar and bedtime so that your body may adjust fluid levels in time. CONSTIPATION Constipation can cause piles (hemorrhoids) , fissures (painful cracks in anal canal) and indigestion with a bloated feeling. Causes: Too much refined foods, too little water and not enough fiber in the diet. Remedy: Avoid excessive refined foods, increase water intake, and use bran in baking, brown flour when making roti. INDIGESTION AND WIND Causes: Over-eating. Too much fried and fatty foods, spicy foods, and foods that produce wind e.g. eggs, cabbage, lentils, carbonated drinks like Cola also produce gas. Remedy: Do not over-eat; drink fruit juices or better still drink water. Avoid fried foods; add ajmor to wind-producing foods. LETHARGY ('low blood pressure') Excessive sweating, weakness, tiredness, lack of energy, dizziness, especially on getting up from sitting position, pale appearance and feeling faint are symptoms associated with "low blood pressure". This tends to occur towards the afternoon. Causes: Too little fluid intake, decreased salt intake. Remedy: Keep cool, increase fluid and salt intake. Caution: Low blood pressure should be confirmed by taking a blood pressure reading when symptoms are present. Persons with high blood pressure may need their medication adjusted during Ramadan. They should consult their doctor. HEADACHE Causes: Caffeine and tobacco-withdrawal, doing too much in one day, lack of sleep, hunger usually occur as the day goes by and worsens at the end of the day. When associated with "low blood pressure", the headache can be quite severe and can also cause nausea before Iftar. Remedy: Cut down caffeine and tobacco slowly starting a week or two before Ramadan. Herbal and caffeine-free teas may be substituted. Reorganize your schedule during the Ramadan so as to have adequate sleep. LOW BLOOD SUGAR Weakness, dizziness, tiredness, poor concentration, perspiring easily, feeling shaky (tremor), unable to perform physical activities, headache, palpitations are symptoms of low blood sugar. Causes: in non-diabetics: Having too much sugar i.e. refined carbohydrates especially at suhur (sehri). The body produces too much insulin causing the blood glucose to drop. Remedy: Eat something at sehri and limit sugar-c

I can fall asleep, I just can't STAY asleep, HELP!? I started taking adderall 3 weeks ago, the first week i was getting bad side effects like irritability, head aches etc, but no sleeping problems at all. The second week started the same but as it went on the side effects seemed to be going away, still no sleeping problems. I took the weekend off of adderall and now my third week i have practically no bad side effects thank god! meanwhile getting all the benefits. so at this point im thinking adderall really is great maybe we just got off on the wrong foot, but ovecourse there has to be something bad, now im having sleeping problems, falling asleep is no problem its staying asleep. last night i went to bed at 12 it didnt take long at all to fall asleep but i woke up around 230, after that i woke up every 30 minuetes to an hour, every time i woke up my head would feel like it was squeezed under pressure kind of like when your on a plane id be tossing and turning and there would be 500 thoughts bouncing around my head all at once, often ill have a song playing in my head OVER AND OVER, at one point i heard a clock ticking it felt so loud and i couldnt block it out, it was driving me crazy and although it didnt last long i relised today i dont even have a clock! the first few times i woke up weren't that bad i fell back asleep pretty quickly but as the night went on it took longer to fall back asleep and it got worse and worse, although i wanted to sleep and knew i should my body and mind were awake and rested. when i tried to sleep my brain would feel overwhelmed with all sorts of random jumbled thoughts all at once and that is a horrible feeling especailly when a pattern like a line of a song just keep playing in your brain over and over and over idk if anyone has had this but its the worst! but when i gave in and just layed there not trying to sleep i didnt feel as bad (dont get me wrong it wasnt fun) the final time i woke up was 545 and i layed in bed trying to sleep until 645 when i finally gave up and just got ready for school, i usually wake up later and then lay in bed a long time slowwyy waking up, this morning was obviously different, when i got out of bed at 645 i was wide awake immediatly and i went through my day totally normal, which was surprising, but im just waiting for this no sleep to catch up, i havnt truely felt tired since last weekend before my third week began i wouldnt even mind all this so much except when i wake up in the night my brain feels so overwhelmed and restless its like I want to sleep but my brain wont SHUT UP and i cant control it, it drives me crazy! its only been a few nights but its getting worse last night although i technically slept none of it felt like sleep because it wasnt for more than an hour at a time and i was never in a "deep" sleep. i know this is almost deffinatly from the adderall, but i dont want to stop taking it even though my restless brain is extreemly annoying at night its not effecting me at all durring the day the lack of sleep hasnt taken a toll on my brain or body(yet atleast) i feel great all day. ..if you have anything to share that would be great and it would be cool to know whats really going on in my body thats doing this BUT my real question it how to stay asleep? i wish falling asleep was the problem because i have lots of solutions for that warm milk, blazing (sorry mom lol), and some tricks to help relax. but im falling alseep like a normal person..actually staying asleep is alot harder of a problem to sovle because its hard to find something that lasts ALL NIGHT. a few people told me to blaze before i go to bed but i feel like it would work for the first few hours of the night but then ware off and ill be back to waking up, am i wrong?? Also since adderall I eat a lot less I cant help it I have no appetite and when I do eat Im full after 2 bites my only concern with that is although before adderall i would have at least 2 cups of coffee a day usually more, and I know my bodies used to it and deffinatly not sensitive to the caffeine. Maybe now that my stomachs practially empty it cant absorb the caffeine the same? (Im only having 1-2 cups now and LOTS of water) but whats different about me now as apposed to the past 2 weeks that im getting these sleeping issues sudenly!?!? someone please answer this ASAP, its pathetic but im afraid to "go to sleep" tonight, maybe ill go back to normal, maybe ill have a repeat of last night, maybe tonight will be even worse (i dont even want to think about that) If anyone has a way to STAY ASLEEP ALL NIGHT please share! please don't judge me for adderall, smoking, eating habits, etc. i just want the well needed benefits of the medication wile still living a normal life and im willing to try anything, except that though ill try smoking and sleeping pills/medication i dont want those to be my perminent solution, i dont want to do either regularly. Thank you so much to anyone who answers this! I appreciate it.

deeds replied: "You should see your doctor. Adderall is not the drug for you. There are many other choices, or maybe even an adjusted dose. You should not try to take anything for sleep until you have your medication changed. You should not be feeling that way when awake either. If you have ADD (which I am assuming since you didn't mention it) you should be calmed by your medication, not hyped up. Maybe you don't have ADD at all.... My son has it and takes Concerta. If he does not take it, he is completely hyper and difficult to be around. Once he takes it, he can calm down and focus. This does not sound like what is happening for you. You should see your doctor right away."
